5 things to do before moving house

Take the time to ensure your utilities are connected and your accounts moved from your old address to your new one, saving you time and frustration after you move.

The last thing you need is to be faced with unpaid bills, overdue fees and a bad mark on your credit record.

  1. Sort out the kids and pets

The day that you move house can be hectic and stressful.

  1. Pack a survival kit

There’s nothing worse than arriving at your new house with all that dreaded unpacking ahead of you – then realising you have no idea where some of the essentials are!

  • Pack yourself an ‘unpacking box’.   • It’s also a great idea to pack a ‘first night’ box, just in case you don’t get through as much of your unpacking one your first day as you’d hoped.
  • This box should contain your overnight essentials – things like toiletries, toothbrush and a bath towel, toilet paper, pyjamas, bed linen and perhaps your kettle, a mug, teaspoon and some tea, coffee, long life milk and sugar.
  • You can then rest assured that no matter where you get up to with your unpacking, you’ll have handy those few bits and pieces you need to be comfortable for your first night in your new home.
  1. Book your family and friends to help out

  • Put the word out for free boxes to pack your belongings in. Send a group email to friends, pop a post on neighbourhood group sites on social media, or ask local stores to save their boxes for you.
  • This way you’ll not only save a fortune on boxes, packing and removalist expenses, but you’ll enjoy the generosity and companionship of friends and family, and have a few laughs as you work together to create your new home.
