And why not try these 10 top tips to save on your fuel use – and therefore save you cash!

Make fewer trips – whenever you can, try to combine your daily errands into one big trip. You’ll avoid fuel wastage by stopping and starting your car less often.

  1. Avoiding driving in peak hour – obviously heavy traffic is something we’d all like to avoid whenever we can, but avoiding it can save you fuel (and cash!) as well as time. The constant stop and start of negotiating heavy traffic wastes a lot of petrol.
  2. Close the windows (and sunroof, if you’ve got one). When you’re out on the open highway, keeping windows closed improves your car’s aerodynamics, reducing the ‘drag’ and your fuel usage.
  3. Remove the roof rack or storage box – just like leaving the windows open when travelling at speed, these increase drag and make your car use more fuel.
  4. Travel light! Just like your body, your car needs more fuel to carry more weight. Storing heavy items in the boot of your car increases the amount of petrol your car needs – so keep these in the garage until you need them.
  5. Be a smooth operator. Reduce your car’s fuel usage by accelerating and braking smoothly whenever you can. The perfect way to travel is at a constant speed and in a high gear. Remember, there’s little point accelerating past a car to simply be in front of it at the next set of lights!
  6. Don’t push the pedal to the metal! When you push the accelerator down a long way to avoid changing into a lower gear (into third from fourth, for example), then you’re actually using more fuel not less.
  7. Minimise the use of air-conditioning – it uses quite a bit of fuel, so keep it for those really hot days.
  8. Check your tyre pressures regularly – low air levels mean your car’s using more fuel.
  9. Keep your car well maintained – regular checks and servicing will help keep your car running well and minimise fuel use. Check out our DIY car maintenance tips to boost your budget!
