Dining out when you’re on budget doesn’t have to break the bank when you’re in the Illawarra area.
Whether you’re catching up with friends and family, dining out for a special occasion or have just been caught out with nothing to eat in the fridge, it’s always nice to treat yourself to a meal out.
But when you’re not flash with cash, it can be hard to find good dining options that are both tasty and won’t break the budget. Here’s our guide to the some of the best cheap eats in the Wollongong area.
Hit Eat Street
Hit the mark with a night hot food market! Every Thursday night from 5pm – 9pm, Wollongong’s Crown Street Mall comes alive with the international fun and flavours of the Eat Street food market. Bring the family or arrange to meet your mates, have a wander and enjoy the vibe of good food, music and fun!
Seaside twilight dining
Another fun food market option across the warmer months is the Twilight Food Markets of the World at Wollongong’s picturesque Flagstaff Hill. Bring a picnic blanket, enjoy some music and savour the flavours of international foods this summer at one of Wollongong’s favourite spots. Italian pizzas, falafel rolls, curries, Dutch pancakes and gozleme are just some of the tempting bites on the menu.
For a value-packed, generous meal, it’s always hard to go past your local RSL. From the traditional roast dinner through to fish and chips, burgers and mouth-watering steaks and contemporary favourites like salt and pepper squid and Atlantic salmon, your local RSL has it all covered at prices that are pretty hard to beat.
Try the $7 Thursday and Friday night steak and sides special at the Warilla Sports Club – the size of the serving has to be seen to be believed!
There’s loads of RSL options in the Wollongong area – check out this handy guide. Try budget busting hot spots including the Albion Park RSL Memorial Club, Illawarra Leagues Club, Illawarra Yacht Club in Warrawong, Wollongong RSL Bowling Club, and in Kiama try the Bowling Club or the Golf Club Bistro.
Cheap and cheerful Chinese
Everyone loves a night out at the local Chinese every now and then. Try Top Choice Restaurant in Wollongong – it’s tried and tested by reviewers on Trip Advisor who give it top marks for being the best (and yummiest!) cheap Chinese in town.
Midweek Mexican mania
If you’re looking for a midweek meal that won’t break the bank, check out $3 Taco Tuesdays or 50c Wing Wednesdays (both nights also offer $5 beers) at Amigos Mexican in Wollongong. Olé!!
Head to Harbour Street
For a tasty and eclectic mix of fun, Middle Eastern inspired food that won’t break the bank, head to Harbour Street café beneath WIN Stadium in Wollongong. One of the Australian Good Food & Travel Guide’s top picks for good food and good value in Wollongong, Harbour Street have a range of great $15 lunch specials Monday-Friday, and often have evening specials, such as their current $3 San Choy Bow night deal.
