From Trash To Treasure

Head to your local tip and upcycle your way to new furniture, homewares and more when you’re on a budget

When you’re on a tight budget, you often need all of your cash to cover the rent or mortgage, buy groceries and pay your bills. There isn’t much cash left over to splurge on new furniture or homewares. But this doesn’t mean you can’t spruce up your home for next to nothing – or even better, for free!

You don’t have to scrimp and save to get the latest looks, fast!

You’ve seen it done on TV – shows like American Pickers, Bargain Hunt and Antiques Roadshow have all shown us that one man’s trash really is another man’s treasure. And it really can be that easy! Why buy new when you can recycle high-quality items that have stood the test of time? Not only does it make sense financially, but it’s great for the environment too. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of finding just what you’re after for your home, for next to nothing.

Tip shops make upcycling easy!

Most local councils have a waste collection facility (or as we all know them, a tip!) and they’re usually keen to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

  • To encourage recycling, many tips have a shop where they sell quality used, recycled and second hand products which have been salvaged before going to landfill.
  • Forget spending hours crawling the kerb and fossicking through your neighbour’s council clean up pile. Head to your local tip shop, where all the hard work has already been done for you.
  • These treasure troves can be a paradise of pre-loved goods including:-
    • household furnishings
    • collectables and bric-a-brac
    • books
    • toys
    • sporting equipment
    • bicycles
    • clothing
    • hardware and building materials
    • plus lots more

You could nab yourself the perfect new dining table or armchair, score a beautiful crystal vase, or some funky retro dinnerware just like Nana used to have!

Top Tip: Remember, when looking at old furniture, remember that you don’t have to love the colour or finish – you can repaint or recover it to get the look you’re after.
